Not what you wold call earth shattering but sorta cool-

US Mint unveils new Lincoln penny in Indiana

LINCOLN CITY, Ind. Nearly 3,000 people gathered at a southern Indiana park for the release of a new penny that pays homage to Abraham Lincoln's years as a Hoosier.

The penny's release Thursday at Lincoln State Park created traffic jams and a quarter-mile-long line filled with coin collectors and Lincoln enthusiasts carrying umbrellas to ward off the rain.

Some waited for hours to get rolls of the newly minted coins that depict on the back side a teenage Lincoln reading a book while taking a break from rail splitting.

Lincoln lived from age 7 to 21 in Spencer County in an area about 30 miles northeast of Evansville.

Most of the pennies were sold at face value to coin collecting fans who could get up to six rolls, but several hundred of the new coins were given away as souvenirs to young people.

U.S. Mint Director Edmond C. Moy says about 700 million of the Indiana pennies will eventually be in circulation.

Still not seen any 2009 coins in circulation here in St. Louis... The only 09's I've seen are ones I've bought (overpaid for) at the mint..

So, this is the second of the four pennies to be released this year, right? I have two of the first batch that I actually received as change almost right after they were released. Still the only two I've seen so far...

I'd like to eventually pick up a roll of each of the different designs once they are all released.

Whats a good price for 4 rolls of 2009 cents? $10 ?

But the big question is -- WHAT IS IT MADE OF?
Any bets on plastic?

What crap, I guess the days of two dimensional structures are gone and I bet this is another one of those shallow reliefs.

The four new Lincoln Cents are some of the worst coins produced by the mint. First the size of the "canvas" of the cent on which to put a design is far too small for the complex scenes they're putting on them. Look at the simplicity of the cent from it's inception to 1958 when the wheat cent ended - it was always a simple wreath or similar with "one cent" stamped on it. Now they're trying to show scenes of Lincoln's life on them?!? Also, they're still made of zinc, so it doesn't do anything for people who appreciate metals either. It is just another scam by the mint to make a ton of new designs so they can charge suckers massive premiums. I'd rather spend ten bucks on ten murcury dimes than a roll of these coins.

Ordered 10 rolls from the mint (the limit) and plan on ordering more from the 'rents house.

These mint rolls are "limited". Check out the "LP1" sales on ebay. They sell for 600% the mint price.

In tokens we trust?

Zinc and tin - because copper and nickel are too expensive?

I'm always interested in new coins, but they'd be a lot better without the images of a mass murderer on them.

Personally, I've never seen one but would like to at least check them out. Is the mint dong a proof? That would be worth a couple of bucks just to throw on the pile.

The only place I've seen them are on my desk in nice Mint wrappers & they were grossly overpaid for! :s15:

I got a log cabin penny the other day when I was sorting through a roll. I thought it was a foreign coin of some sort before I examined it more closely.

With all the money they just printed over the last 7 months (a doubling)
it should be a TWO DOLLAR BILL.

The TWO dollar BILL is COMING due TO soon - TOO! TWO TO TOO get it? :111::111::111:

I wonder if China had any input on the design? Come to think of it, that log cabin kinda looks like a character from the Chinese alphabet!

Evidently you've missed the Mints new series; "Great Tyrants and Murderers of the 19th & 20th Century". The Joe Stalin coin is really cool!!:wink:
